Ragana (The Witch)

Love, before the world called her a witch.

A Lithuanian song becomes a dark Baltic fairy tale. Tender farewells give way to fire, magic and a mounted rescue, as one woman follows her longing through a world that turns against her. Written, composed and directed by Eugene Zalan.

Posmas 1

Oi tu, šarka, tu, šarkele,Atskriski pas mane, paukštele.
Mano mielas neatėjo,Nors sugrįžti jis žadėjo.

Priedainis

Plaštakė į ugnį skrenda,Naktį savo kelią randa.

Posmas 2

Juodu paukščiu aš pavirsiu,Vėjo šnabždesį išgirsiu.
Prie ugnies aš uždainuosiu,Vėjui paslaptį išduosiu.

Priedainis

Plaštakė į ugnį skrenda,Naktį savo kelią randa.

Posmas 3

Žalios samanos alsuoja,Mano ilgesiui dainuoja.
Aš klajosiu žalumoj,Žvaigždės ves mane tamsoj.

Priedainis

Plaštakė į ugnį skrenda,Naktį savo kelią randa.

01 / Intimacy and impact

A farewell held in a glance. A hand reaching for someone who is no longer there. RAGANA places tenderness and romance at the centre of a story that grows into mounted combat, sudden impacts and escape. The spectacle has something personal at stake.

02 / Fire, explosions and magic

Buildings erupt in flame, a battlefield appears inside a fire, and a woman rises above the forest floor. Firelight, smoke, explosive bursts and supernatural movement become part of the storytelling, from intimate visions to wide action sequences.

03 / A Baltic fairy-tale world

Spruce forests, moss, timber houses, a flower wreath and a moth at a candlelit window give the film its sense of place. Coloured moonlight carries the landscape into the uncanny, while natural textures keep the fantasy connected to an earthly world.

04 / One direction, from song to screen

Eugene Zalan brings original Lithuanian lyrics, music, visual direction and editing into a single film. The project demonstrates a range from close emotional scenes to cinematic action and fantasy environments, shaped around the recurring image of a moth drawn to fire.
